Terminology
Powers:
A power is a product of repeated factors. Also known as exponential form.
Base:
The identical factor in a power. Remember that you always multiply the factor by itself and not the exponent.
In this power the base is 5.
Exponent:
The exponent tells how many factors are in the power.
In this power the exponent is 3.
Expanded Form:
Expanded form is another way to write powers but shows all the steps to get to the product.
This is the expanded form of 5^3. Both have the same product but they are just written in different ways.
Product
Is the word used for the answer to a multiplication question.
The product of this expression is 25.
Qu
otient:
The word used for the answer of a division question.
The quotient of 15 divided by three is five.
Term:
An expression formed by a product of numbers and/or variables.
All of the above are terms.
Coefficient
The numerical part of a term.
In the above 5 and 3 are coefficients. The exponent in x is considered part of the variable and is not a coefficient.
Variable
Consists of one or more variables and exponents attached to it.
All of the above are considered variables.
Constant Term:
A term with no variable that is also called a Constant.
All of the above are constants.
