Degree of Terms:
To find the degree of a term, you add the exponents on all of the variables in the term, and the sum is the degree.

In the example, the first term's sum of variables is 2, making it a second degree term. In the second term the sum of the term's variables 5, making it a fifth degree term.
Degree of Polynomials:
To find the degree of a polynomial, you must find the highest degree term in the polynomial.

Because the second term has a greater degree, the degree of the polynomial is 5.
